Shush pat method sleep training11/16/2023 ![]() ![]() Remember he isn't ready to do it on his own yet, but the shh/pat is a tool that will eventually teach him how-so the shh/pat will get less and less. ![]() If your LO is the type that jolts into sleep rather fitfully he needs extra shh/pat to go into a deep sleep. you usually know if their eyes stop moving. Shush Pat is a fantastic settling technique for babies from 0-6 months and can work really well for some temperaments. I dont get a chance to sit and calm him, I use the shush pat method. Keep your hands on baby’s chest and wait a few seconds to see how baby reacts. Remember it usually takes a baby about 20 min to go into a deep sleep. For more about this technique, check out How to Sleep Train Your Baby Using Dr. The idea essentially of the pick up, put down and shush pat method is to comfort your baby every time they start fussing. 1) Cry It Out Cry It Out or full extinction to distinguish it from another method we discuss later on is based on the theory that you can train your baby not to cry at night by simply not responding to their cries. How to do it: Feed, burp, and change your baby, putting them down while still awake. This is sometimes called the shush, pat sleep training method. As it took less and less time for her to close her eyes and fall asleep, we started cutting down the extra 20 min we stayed there (first at night, then naps) and finally, we had a lo who goes to sleep all on her own, no shh/pat at all. This is a much gentler method than the CIO, Ferber, or even the Chair Method, as it will require you to touch and/or hold your baby to soothe them to sleep. This sleep training technique is like the Ferber method, but when you return to check on your baby at specific, graduated intervals you can go ahead and provide some direct physical comfort. ![]() We'd start shh/pat on our shoulder, then move her to the crib (drowsy, but still awake), then shh/pat in the crib til she closed her eyes (and seemed to be asleep), then continued through the first 20 min sleep cycle (gradually tapering off the shh and the pat). When we were working on the whole sleep training thing, we'd do the 4 S wind down (set the stage, swaddle, sit, shh/pat). How To 'Shush-Pat' Before Sleep Times: If after doing the 'Four S' ritual baby is fussy or crying when placed in his crib, start to make shh sounds and pat him firmly in the center of the back with a steady rhythm. In terms of crying, Tracy never recommends leaving your lo to cry, you can use pat/shh while they are crying, but some babies do get more wound up with that, so I know some moms who just rub or just shh or just put their hand on their lo, you kind of have to experiment to see what works best for your lo. So give it at least 2 weeks of consistent shh/patting before you make a descision on the technique. Pu/pd is usually only used once shh/pat is not successful. ![]()
